Most people fail when it comes to presenting. Why is this? Nerves? If they’ve been chosen to present they know what they are talking about, so it’s not their lack of knowledge. It’s much more basic than this – they lack empathy with their audience. They are so concerned about their presentation, topic and delivery that they have forgotten who’s listening and how to work out the best way to talk to them. Here are Mark Francis from the Uspire Group’s tips on how to nail a presentation.

Uspire’s Mark Francis Presenting with Impact

  • Never forget the audience

Think about how to keep them engaged. People are so distracted and bombarded with messages from social media, email, newspapers, TV and the radio that you need to work hard to keep their attention.

  • Throw away the script

Know your key points and have them written down but talk to your audience off your script and be in the moment. They are making an instant decision about whether they want to listen to you or not. Authentic engagement is crucial.

Move away from the Powerpoint

  • Move away from the PowerPoint

Just thinking about seeing another PowerPoint presentation is making me want to fall asleep right now. Get some strong visuals together that back up what you are saying and use them effectively.

  • Respect your audience

Deep down everybody wants respect and appreciation. If you can get your audience to trust you and get involved with your storytelling, they will stay engaged and learn with you.

  • Remember your key point

To deliver a presentation, which has an impact with your audience you need to state and land the key message at the beginning and the end of your presentation. Tell your story in your own way and make sure that you are authentic, brave, and collaborative.

Remember your key point

“If you can’t write your message in a sentence, you can’t say it in an hour.”
